Tsavorite: The Green Phoenix of Africa

Discovery in the Wilderness

In 1967, British geologist Campbell Bridges discovered a striking green gemstone in the hills of northeastern Tanzania. This discovery led to the identification of Tsavorite, named after Tsavo National Park in Kenya where the finest specimens are found. The gem's vivid green color rivals emerald with superior brilliance and durability.

The Kenyan Connection

Kenya's Tsavorite deposits are concentrated in the Taita-Taveta region. Feniks works directly with local mining cooperatives in Kenya to ensure ethical sourcing and fair compensation for these remarkable finds.

Why Tsavorite is Special

Unlike emerald, Tsavorite is typically untreated — its spectacular green color is entirely natural. With a hardness of 7-7.5 on the Mohs scale and no cleavage planes, it is significantly more durable than emerald, making it ideal for everyday jewelry.

Rarity & Value

Tsavorite remains significantly rarer than emerald. For every 20 emeralds mined, only one Tsavorite is found. As deposits become depleted and demand grows among collectors and jewelers, fine Tsavorite represents an exceptional opportunity.
